I did a series of paintings called ‘Sealta’/’Shawls’ for an exhibition in the Grainstore Gallery in Galway City in 199 3., ‘Hookers and Red Petticoats. The petticoats were the traditional red flannel skirts that the women of the Aran Islands wore and the hookers were the original turf boats that carried cargo from Galway city to the islands. The work was influenced by what I had explored of First Nations’ People, Canada, their culture and dress patterns during a study period in NSCAD , Halifax, Nova Scotia. Who knows but that the American continent and our island were once a connected landmass supporting commonalities of culture and living?
